SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tanner Hicks tossed 7 1/3 quality innings but the Trojans couldn’t provide the needed run support as the team fell to Texas State, 5-2, at Bobcat Ballpark on Saturday.

Hicks (2-8) surrendered just four hits and two earned runs, but the Trojan defense faltered committing three errors and allowing three unearned runs to cross.

Trailing 1-0, Troy (21-26, 8-14 SBC) took the lead in the fourth. Jo-El Bennett led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his sixth of the season. Nick Masonia followed with a double to center and Trevin Hall drove him in with a single up the middle. Masonia became the fourth Trojan on the season reach double-digits in two-baggers.

Texas State (26-21, 14-9) would regain the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth. Hicks walked Ben McElroy and Garrett Mattlage to start the frame, Garrett Studdard then singled to load the bases. A passed ball allowed the tying run to cross before Austin O’Neal’s sacrifice fly plated the go-ahead run. The Bobcats added two more runs courtesy of a pair of Troy errors in the eighth.

The Trojans were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth but Lemke was able to close the door.

Taylor Black (5-4) picked up the win on the mound for Texas State after pitching seven innings allowing two runs on six hits. Hunter Lemke tossed the final two innings to earn his 10th save of the season, setting a new Texas State single-season record.

Clay Holcomb was the lone Trojan to record multiple hits; he finished 2-for-4.

Troy and Texas State will play the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
