SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Troy University baseball team couldn’t dig out of an early hole as Texas State defeated the Trojans, 6-2, to compete a three-game sweep at Bobcat Ballpark on Sunday.

Starter Ben Tidwell allowed two singles and an RBI double to Garrett Mattlage to begin the bottom of the first inning. Granger Studdard and Tyler Pearson would drive in a run each with ground balls in the frame. Tidwell (1-2) would take the loss after pitching just 1 1/3 innings.

Freshman Marc Skinner would take over in the second and toss 4 2/3 quality innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out six.

Jakob Nixon drove in the Trojans first run in the fifth with a ground ball. Trevin Hall, who led off the inning with a walk, scored on the play to cut the Bobcat lead to 3-1.

Cody Perkins got the run back for Texas State with an RBI single in the sixth but David Hall answered with an RBI single of his own in the seventh. Troy would get the tying run to the plate in the inning but would fail to inflict any more damage.

The Bobcats pulled away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. The first run scored when Studdard hit a deep fly ball to center. Taylor Bailey, who was pinch-running for David Paiz, tagged from second base. Bailey never broke stride as he rounded third and scored despite the close play at the plate. Trey Hicks singled home Tanner Hill later in the frame to cap the scoring at 6-2.

Nixon and David Hall both finished with two hits and an RBI. As a team, the Trojans left 10 runnners on base and struck out 11 times.

The loss coupled with wins by ULM and Georgia State drop Troy to ninth in the Sun Belt Conference standing and out of the conference tournament for the time being. The Trojans have six more league games to make up ground before the SBC Baseball Championships begin in Mobile on May 25. The team will travel to Arkansas State for a three-game series set to start on Friday.
