AUBURN, Ala. - Aubie, Auburn's beloved mascot, is a national champion again. At Disney World in Orlando on Friday, Aubie beat out runnerup Goldy Gopher, the defending champion, for his eighth Universal Cheerleaders Association national title.
Aubie has won more championships than any other mascot.
The late Phil Neel surely wouldn't have imagined such when he drew a unique tiger for the cover of the program for Auburn's game against Hardin-Simmons in 1959.
Neel's tiger became nationally known and appeared on the cover of Auburn football programs for 19 years, but it wasn't until 1979 that the tiger came to life as Aubie. He made his first appearance at the 1979 Southeastern Conference basketball tournament in Birmingham.
Today, Aubie is a celebrated part of Auburn's gameday experience in all sports. He also makes appearances at numerous other Auburn functions.
And he is a national champion.
