MOBILE, Alabama - Tre Williams' stellar 2012-2013 athletic year started last summer.

"(Head football) coach (Steve) Mask sat down with me and just told me, 'there is no bigger year than your junior year,'" Williams said earlier this week.

"'Everybody is going to be watching you to see what you can do.' He said my junior year would set the tone for my high school career."

Mask was right.

Williams' junior year at St. Paul's started with a bang and finished with a state title.

The two-time All-State linebacker, who committed to Auburn this spring, led the Saints to the state semifinals in football. He was a finalist for the Class 5A Lineman of the Year Award and was named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association Super 12, a list of the state's best player regardless of classification.

In the winter, he helped the St. Paul's basketball team to a top 10 ranking and was an honorable mention Press-Register All-Region pick. Williams capped his junior year by winning the Class 5A state shot put title in Gulf Shores. He also was an honorable mention All-Region pick in track and field.

For his efforts, Williams is the Press-Register's third Male High School Athlete of the Year. He follows in the footsteps of Leroy's Sammie Coates and Thomasville's Tyler Hayes.
