In the offseason prior to the 2011 season, quarterbacks AJ McCarron and Phillip Sims found themselves locked in a heated competition for the starting quarterback job at Alabama, with the two players each earning the title of co-starter until two weeks into the 2011 season.
McCarron would go on to win the job and lead the Crimson Tide to back-to-back national championships while Sims transferred to Virginia before deciding to leave the Cavaliers after a difficult 2012 season.
When the news came on Monday that Sims would be transferring to Division II power Winston-Salem State University to finish his college career, his former competitor and teammate McCarron was among the first to congratulate Sims.
