TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Tony Mitchell’s last season in college basketball ended early. His first season in pro basketball started late. But once it began, he made quite a leap.

Can the former Alabama star still leap?

“Oh, my goodness,” said Duane Ticknor, head coach of the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Mad Ants in the NBA Developmental League. “He won the slam-dunk contest at the All-Star Game. Our two best players went down with injuries. One was the leading scorer in the league. The other was in the top six.

“When they went down, we leaned on Tony big time.”

Mitchell went on to be named the league’s Rookie of the Year.
