The Troy Football Team remembers it's last trip to Legion Field all too well. The Trojans watched a late lead slip away, losing on the final play of the game on a controversial Hail Mary.
Bryan Ellis hit Jackie Williams with a 44-yard touchdown pass on the game's final play, giving the Blazers a 34-33 win. But, Williams appeared to land at the one-yard line and bounce into the endzone.
With no TV for the game, replay angles were limited, and the touchdown stood. Two years later, Troy is ready for another crack at UAB in Birmingham, and the team has that loss fixed squarely in it's mind as it' prepares to visit the Magic City.
"It was one of the toughest losses I've ever been through," Head Coach Larry Blakeney said. " We've had some tough loses since I've been here, but that one was pretty tough. We certainly dealt with it well. We continued on, even though we lost that game up there, but we used it.
"It was a tough, tough ordeal to go through for me, the players, our coaches and our people. And the game last year was almost the same."
Troy scored 10 points in the fourth quarter at Veteran's Stadium last season, beating the Blazers 24-23. This year's Troy-UAB game will be played at Legion Field, with kickoff set for 11 a.m. on Fox College Sports.
