ASHFORD, AL -- Trey Johnston was a jack of all trades for the Ashford Academy Football Team. Now, he's taking his game to the next level.
Johnston on Tuesday signed a letter of intent to play for Birmingham Southern College. He is the third player from last year's team to sign a college scholarship, joining Colby Turvin and Gil Bauer, who both signed with Huntingdon College.
Earning a college scholarship is the dream of every high school football player, but Johnston says he had plenty of reasons to pick the Panthers.
"They're a great liberal arts college," Johnston said. "I feel like their academics and my desire to learn really fit together. They also have a good football team.
"They won their conference championship last year, and I figured while I'm going to school, I can play football."
Johnston had a huge senior year for the Falcons. He rushed for 971 yards and 11 touchdowns, while hauling in four receiving scores and throwing a TD pass as well. He was also one of the area's best defenders, recording 91 tackles and six interceptions.
