BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Harriet Washington of Aliceville High
School and Piedmont's Jessica Shannon DeVoe won the top
Bryant-Jordan awards in the annual statewide competition for
student athletes.

Washington was the state's overall Scholar-Athlete Award winner,
while Devoe received the statewide Achievement Award.

They were among 96 regional winners honored at the 26th annual
Bryant-Jordan Student Athlete Awards Banquet Monday night in
Birmingham. Winners were awarded approximately $800,000 in
scholarships.

The program recognized 48 regional scholar-athlete winners
selected for excellence in athletics and academics, and 48
achievement winners chosen for overcoming major obstacles during
their high school careers.

The student athlete program is named in honor of the late
coaches Paul "Bear" Bryant of Alabama and Ralph "Shug" Jordan
of Auburn.
