COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Former South Carolina quarterback Mike
Hold is proud he was part of the Gamecocks landmark 1984 season, no matter frequently people bring up the Navy loss that brought their
national championship dreams to an end.
The Gamecocks opened 9-0 and rose to No. 2 in the country that
fall. A win at 3-5-1 Navy would've moved South Carolina to No. 1 in
the country and earned them a berth in the Orange Bowl to play for
a national title. Instead, the Midshipmen posted a 38-21 stunner
that has forever clouded the only 10-victory season in South
Carolina program history.
Navy has not had another top-10 win since, something it will try
for when the Midshipmen play No. 10 South Carolina at
Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday.
