TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – With the 508th overall selection in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft, junior right-handed relief pitcher Ian Gardeck (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 16th round on Wednesday.
In his first season at Alabama, Gardeck posted a 1-2 record with a 5.84 ERA and one save in 2012. Gardeck appeared in 13 games and recorded 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings out of the bullpen. During SEC play, Gardeck made four appearances with 2.1 innings pitched for a 0-1 record.
After playing one season at Angelina College, Gardeck came to Tuscaloosa after being selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 261st overall pick in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB draft. Gardeck joins senior outfielder Taylor Dugas as two Alabama players to be selected in this year’s MLB Draft. Dugas was picked by the New York Yankees in the eighth round on Tuesday.
