AUBURN, Ala. - The top-ranked University of Alabama men's golf team begins play at the 2014 NCAA Auburn Regional Championship Thursday morning at the par-72, 7,326-yard Auburn University Club.
The top-ranked and reigning NCAA Champion Crimson Tide is the top-seeded team in the 14-team Auburn Regional. The regional marks the 10th straight year that the Crimson Tide has reached the NCAA Regional's under head coach Jay Seawell, the longest consecutive streak in team history, and the 23rd overall appearance.
The 14-team regional features No. 2 seed Virginia Tech, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Auburn, No. 5 New Mexico, No. 6 BYU, No. 7 Kennesaw State, No. 8 Colorado, No. 9 Louisville, No. 10 North Carolina Greensboro, No. 11 UC Davis, No. 12 Sam Houston State, No. 13 St. John's and No. 14 Alabama State.
The top five finishers at the NCAA Auburn Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at Prairie Dunes Country Club on May 23-28 in Hutchinson, Kan.
The Crimson Tide's lineup, which won the SEC title the last time out, is one of the deepest in the nation with four first team All-SEC selections at the top of the card, including the SEC Player of the Year Robby Shelton. Alabama boasts four players in the top 35 of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and all five in the top 102. Shelton leads the way at No. 1, followed by Bobby Wyatt at No. 6, Trey Mullinax at No. 8 and Cory Whitsett at No. 35.
Alabama has won its last two NCAA Regionals and three in school history. The Tide won the NCAA Galloway (N.J.) Regional in 2009, the 2012 NCAA Athens (Ga.) Regional and the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge (La.) Regional. The Crimson Tide have won seven of 10 tournaments this season, including its third straight SEC Championship. The Tide has also won 15 of its last 20 events and 20 of its last 30.
Alabama will tee off at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Auburn University Club and will be playing with Virginia Tech and Texas.
