Mason, Auburn's backfield have plenty to prove

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Tre Mason and his fellow Auburn tailbacks have plenty to prove this season.
Mason says he wants to prove wrong people who say he wasn't big enough or strong enough to be a featured Southeastern Conference tailback despite topping 1,000 yards last season.
The Tigers' backfield figures to be bigger and stronger -- and likely better -- with the addition of junior college transfer Cameron Artis-Payne and freshman Peyton Barber.
Auburn's running game struggled against SEC defenses last season.
The Tigers ran for 148.4 yards per game and 16 touchdowns -- both the lowest totals since 2008. They ranked last in the SEC against league defenses, producing just 86.8 yards on the ground and averaging a paltry 2.6 per carry with five touchdowns.
Auburn opens Aug. 31 against Washington State.
