AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn coach Gene Chizik knows progress can be painful sometimes.

The construction work sending a steady drumbeat thudding through his office Thursday morning was evidence of that. The football program, like the athletic facilities, remains under renovation.

Fifteen-plus months removed from a national title, Chizik is busy assembling his fourth full-year recruiting class, and he says this one "is going to get us where we need to be."

The Tigers have won 31 games in his first three years. They have 19 returning starters and a roster that is more than two-thirds underclassmen.

Chizik says many of those youngsters battled returning starters for jobs during the recently concluded spring practices. He says that competition is "where you want to get to" and that Auburn is getting close to that point.
