AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Former Auburn running back Eric Smith was
charged with third-degree domestic violence six days before the
university said he was no longer on the team.

Auburn confirmed Monday that Smith had been dismissed, but it
only said he violated team rules. A police report says Smith was
arrested and charged after an incident the night of Feb. 22.

The report says Smith was sober and didn't resist arrest.

Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones tells the Opelika-Auburn News that
the 20-year-old spent about 12 hours in the Lee County Detention
Center before being released the next day on a $500 bond.

Smith played in all 14 games for the national champion Tigers.
He missed the 2009 opener after being charged with third-degree
assault, and was ultimately granted youthful offender status.
