MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has ridden one of the nation's
stingiest defenses to the top of the Southeastern Conference
standings.

The Crimson Tide has won eight of its last nine games to move to
a league-best 5-1 record in SEC play.

Alabama ranks fifth nationally in scoring defense and second in
field goal percentage allowed and has been even better in those
categories during its hot stretch.

Coach Anthony Grant said Monday that his players understand they
have to play that kind of defense to win in the SEC.

Grant says the recent success has given his team confidence "in
terms of what we're capable of doing and what we have to do to put
ourselves in position to win."

The Tide hosts Mississippi State Wednesday night and visits
Tennessee this weekend.
