Linebacker Dont’a Hightower
(On the team’s depth at linebacker) “It’s one of the most athletic groups to come through Alabama in a long time. You won’t see a group of guys work harder in the country. C.J. Mosley helped us out tremendously last year. Country Upshaw had a great year. Nico (Johnson) and Jerrell (Harris) both have taken the next steps they need.”
(On the team’s defense) “We have one of the most athletic defenses that’s been through Alabama. Last year, we lacked the speed part, getting after the quarterback. This year, I think it’s what our defense is about, getting after the quarterback. Last year, losing that one or two seconds, or giving the quarterback that extra time, that made a big difference. If we can get there faster, that relieves pressure off the defensive backs.”
(On recovering from knee surgery fall 2009) “The only time I felt maybe 100 percent was against Michigan State. In the A-Day game, I think I went out and set the tone, let people know that last year was a slump, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. They say after major knee surgery, the
second year is when you pick it up. I’m still going to rehab and therapy for it, but I’ll be read to go when the season starts.”
(On Richardson) “I feel if there’s any time for Trent to set the tone, it’s this year. Losing Mark (Ingram) and Julio (Jones) on the offense, I feel Trent has the perfect time to set the tone. Everyone in the country knows how talented he is. We believe in him. He and Mark Barron are one of the leaders on the team. We look for him (Trent) to come out on Saturdays and show what he can do.”
(On the April tornadoes) “Tuscaloosa thrives on football so to have something to look forward to, the season, to heal, heal even a little bit, for some people, that’s all they have. We’re working hard to give them back some of that, like the Saints did with Katrina.”
(On his favorite thing to do as a linebacker) “One of my favorite things to do is to blitz or come off the edge as a defensive end. It’s more instinctive, less responsibility. It’s about ability more than technique, you can go out and have fun.”
