Auburn's latest Big Cat Weekend has already yielded its first commitment as Opelika tight end Jakell Mitchell committed to the Tigers within the first few hours of the event on Saturday morning. Mitchell, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound athlete, is the 8th player to commit to the Tigers for their 2014 recruiting class.
"He had a plan going into this weekend that he was going to commit," said Opelika head coach Brian Blackmon. "He felt strongly that Auburn was the right place for him. He had done a lot of reseach with his dad and visited a lot of universities this spring. At the end of the day he just felt the most comfortable at Auburn."
Blackmon said Auburn is recruiting Mitchell for their H-back position, a position that combines the duties of fullback and tight end, two positions that Mitchell plays regularly for his high school squad.
"That's what sold him I think," Blackmon said. "That's what he does a lot for us so he could see himself in that offense. The coaches at Auburn also said they could see him playing some at the inside receiver spot as well. He's a multi-talented guy and could really play a lot of different roles for them. Coach (Rhett) Lashlee felt like they had a real need for that position in this class and Jakell was number one on their board."
