Jimmie Johnson stayed silent out of frustration

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) -- Jimmie Johnson says he didn't speak to reporters after his engine failed at Michigan because there was nothing positive he could say.

Johnson was leading with five laps to go Sunday when he lost the engine in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. The five-time NASCAR champion angrily left the track, drawing attention to the rare instance he failed to stop to talk to the media.

Johnson said Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway he was just frustrated and he didn't see any point in discussing it publicly. The win would have given Johnson a series-best four wins on the season, and earned him three more bonus points for seeding during the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Instead, he finished 27th and dropped from first to fourth in the standings.
