GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - College football's long bowl season comes
to a climax tonight when No. 1 Auburn takes on second-ranked Oregon in the BCS title game. It's the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Auburn is seeking its first national title since 1957. Oregon is
hunting its first national championship.
The 13-0 Tigers have Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, who led
the Southeastern Conference in rushing, passer efficiency and
scoring. Newton averages 108 yards rushing a game, completes 67
percent of his passes and has accounted for 49 touchdowns - 21
running and 28 passing.
The 12-0 Ducks have running back LaMichael James, who keys an
offense that scores a nation-high 49.1 points a game. The
third-place finisher in the Heisman balloting has averaged 152
yards and almost two touchdowns a game for an offense that has
scored 40-plus points 10 times this season.
