TROY, Ala. – UAB jumped out to an early six-run lead en route to a 9-3 victory over Troy Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field to snap the Trojans five-game win streak.
The Blazers chased Troy starter Ryan Brady after just two-thirds of an inning after picking up a pair of runs on three hits and a walk. Ryan Prinzing gave UAB a 5-0 lead in the second with his first home run of the season – a three-run shot – following a pair of walks and a strikeout. The Blazers manufactured a run in the third with an infield single, a stolen base and a pair of grounders.
Logan Pierce, who finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs, put the Trojans on the board with a two-run homer in the third after Josh McDorman led off the frame with a single back up the middle.
UAB stretched its lead back out to six, 8-2, in the sixth on a two-run single by Jack Frost following a one-out walk and double. Ivan De Jesus added a solo homer to leadoff the eighth.
Pierce added an RBI double in the eighth after McDorman once again led off the inning with a single; McDorman finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
Frost finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBIs while Prinzing was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Tyler Mims was 2-for-5. Sam Kelley (1-0) picked up the win for UAB after holding Troy to three runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work.
The Trojans open Sun Belt Conference play this weekend when South Alabama visits Riddle-Pace Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
