The Turkey Classic, the annual showdown between rivals Alabama State and Tuskegee is apparently no more.
Tuesday, Tuskegee put out its 2013 football schedule along with a statement, citing its desire to participate in the NCAA Division II playoffs, should it be eligible, as its reason to no longer participate and discontinue the longest running black college football classic in the country.
"The Golden Tigers finished 10-2 last season, and had to watch as SIAC (Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) opponents Miles College (2011 SIAC champions) and Fort Valley State (2011 East Division Champions) played in the opening rounds of the Division II playoffs. Tuskegee went 3-0 against both opponents last season, defeating Miles College at the regular season before defeating FVSU for the second time in the 2012 SIAC Championship Game," the release said.
