CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- True freshman Brad Kaaya has won the Miami Hurricanes' quarterback job.

Kaaya was announced as the starter Sunday by Miami coach Al Golden. Kaaya edged out transfer Jake Heaps for the Week 1 nod, in a race that became open in the spring when presumed starter Ryan Williams tore a knee ligament.

Kaaya and Heaps were told of the decision before Miami practiced Sunday afternoon.

The 6-foot-4, 206-pound native of West Hills, California, enrolled at Miami in May, about three months before the start of training camp. He went 23-3 as a high school starter and Golden says Kaaya made many sacrifices since arriving on campus in order to fully understand Miami's offense.

Miami opens at Louisville on Sept. 1.
