TROY, Ala. – Troy senior Will Scott has been named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List, the Augusta Sports Council announced Friday morning. The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to the nation’s top punter.
Scott currently ranks sixth in the NCAA averaging 45.4 yards per punt, while the Trojans are 12th nationally and first in the Sun Belt averaging 40.1 net yards per punt.
Scott, a native of Lucedale, Miss., joins Notre Dame’s Kyle Brindza and Boston College’s Nate Freese as the only three players to appear on both the Ray Guy Watch List and the Lou Groza Award Watch List; the Groza Award is presented to the nation’s top place kicker.
His punt average for the season would rank as the best in Troy school history and his current career average of 42.7 yards per punt would establish a new Troy career record.
The list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists to be announced on November 8. Following the semifinalists announcement, a national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, coaches, media representatives and previous Ray Guy Award winners will vote for the top three finalists, who will be identified on Nov. 25. The voting body will then cast ballots to select the winner.
The presentation of the Ray Guy Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN. The show, hosted by ESPN’s Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will feature live presentation of nine player awards, along with the recipients of Disney’s Spirit Award, The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, the NCFAA (National College Football Awards Association) Contributions to College Football Award, and student-athletes selected to the Walter Camp All-America Team.
