TROY, Ala. – The Troy women’s basketball team battled back-and-forth for much of the day with Alabama, but the Crimson Tide used a late run to pull out an 80-71 victory at Trojan Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The two sides were tied at the half and Troy (2-7) was down by just four, 71-67, with 3:17 to go in the game. However, the Trojans didn’t score for nearly three minutes and Alabama used an 8-0 run to pull ahead by 12 with 34 seconds to go, sealing the game. Troy added two late baskets to cut the final scored to single digits.
For the second straight game, Britney McCloud scored over 20 and led the Trojans in scoring, this time with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting. However, after entering 7-of-9 from deep in her last two games, McCloud was 0-of-3 as the Trojans shot just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from deep, their worst effort of the year.
Sarah McAppion narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds while Ashley Beverly-Kelley also scored in double figures with 11 points.
Troy outshot Alabama on the day as the Trojans went 41.4 percent (29-of-70) from the floor to the Crimson Tide’s 34.5 percent (29-of-84), but the story, especially in the second half, was at the free throw line.
After the two sides combined for just eight first-half fouls and six first-half free throw attempts, 22 fouls were called in the second half and the two sides combined for 33 free throw attempts, 23 of them by Alabama.
Alabama (6-2) finished the game 14-of-26 from the free throw line while Troy was 10-of-13, that after entering the game averaging over 25 free attempts per game.
Jasmine Robinson led the Crimson Tide in scoring with 25 points while Shafontaye Myers and Daisha Simmons where also in double figures with 15 points each.
Troy amassed 50 rebounds for the second time this season while Alabama picked up 53 boards. The Crimson Tide came in forcing 31.0 turnovers per game, the most in the country, but Troy turned it over just 20 times on the day.
The contest against Alabama was the second of three against the SEC this month for Troy. The Trojans will travel to Mississippi State to close non-conference action on December 29 and have already played at Florida.
The game against the Crimson Tide at Trojan Arena was the first home game against the SEC for the Trojans in over 15 years.
The Trojans have a quick turn around as they travel to Jacksonville on Tuesday before returning home to continue Sun Belt play against Florida Atlantic on Friday.
