BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – An eighth inning, RBI double by Erica Davis lifted Troy (17-24-2) past a hot UAB squad (23-18), 3-2, on Thursday night at the UAB Softball Field.
Troy, playing in its fourth consecutive extra-inning game, got great work out of its two pitchers. Jaycee Affeldt was solid in the circle, striking out four over five innings of work. Ashley Rainey came in in relief, tossing three innings and allowing just two hits, earning her fifth win of the season.
The Trojans wasted no time getting on the board, plating two in the first. Troy loaded the bases with one out, on a single by Michelle Phelps. Next up, Amanda Winters roped a single to right field, plating Ebony Wright and Davis.
The Blazers, who had entered the game winners of 15 of its last 20, would narrow the deficit in the bottom of the second, scoring one, and then tie the game up in the fifth.
Wright picked up a single with two outs in the top of the eighth and was then brought home on a double by Davis.
Next up for the Trojans is a three-game series at Sun Belt newcomer UT Arlington. Game one is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
