TROY, Ala. – Troy University softball head coach Melanie Davis has resigned her position effective immediately, Athletic Director John Hartwell announced Monday.
“On behalf of Troy University, I would like to thank Melanie Davis for her two decades of service and dedication to the University and the countless student-athletes she mentored,” Hartwell said. “We wish Melanie nothing but the best in her future endeavors.”
Davis compiled a 780-509-4 record over her 21 seasons at Troy and led the Trojans to a pair of conference titles and one NCAA Regional berth.
“I had the pleasure of appointing Coach Melanie Davis in 1993,” Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., said. “Initially, she was head coach of both volleyball and softball. In 1996 she devoted herself to her first love—softball. In 21 years at Troy University, Coach Davis coached TROY softball to 780 wins, but her value extended far beyond the field. She developed a generation of students into outstanding young women who have excelled in all walks of life. I hold Coach Davis in the highest regard and wish her the best as she enters the next chapter in her life. While she will be missed on campus, she will always be a Trojan.”
Troy will begin a national search immediately to find Davis’ replacement.
Statement from Melanie Davis
It is with mixed emotions that I tender my resignation as the softball head coach of Troy University. I offer my heartfelt thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Jack Hawkins for their support and mentorship throughout my tenure. Your loyalty, friendship and dedication to both my personal and professional growth has been most valuable and will forever be appreciated.
I am also grateful for the countless loyal and dedicated staff and student-athletes who battled in the trenches to build the program that has been dear to my heart for the past 21 years. Our time together has resulted in friendships that will continue to span the years and forge additional opportunities for good times and special memories.
I am equally thankful for the generosity and support of countless donors, fans and friends who have helped my staff and team through every endeavor undertaken. You mean more than I can ever convey.
Lastly, I wish the best of success to the current student-athletes who are blessed to wear the uniform. I have no doubt that you will be successful in the classroom, on the field and in the wonderful game of life.
