Troy Romps Past Florida A&M in Double Header Sweep.

TROY, Ala. – Danny Collins hit for the cycle and drove in a combined eight runs and Shane McCain shined in his return to the diamond as Troy swept a doubleheader from Florida A&M Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.

The Trojans took game one 22-5 and won the nightcap 11-1; both games were shortened to seven innings due to a 10-run rule.

Collins needed just four at-bats to complete Troy’s first cycle since Myles Hoyle accomplished the feat against Memphis in 2009. The junior slugger put the Trojans on the board with an RBI double in the first and added an RBI triple in the third. Collins, who hit a team-leading 12 home runs last year, clobbered a three-run homer in the fourth and completed the cycle by beating out an infield single in the first of two at-bats in the sixth; he added another single in his second at-bat of the frame to finish the game 5-for-6 with three runs scored and six RBIs.

Trae Santos almost put Troy in the NCAA record book as he finished a double shy of Troy’s second cycle in the game. Santos finished the game 3-for-6 with three RBIs, three runs scored and his first home run as a Trojan.

The Trojans combined for 32 hits in the doubleheader with 15 of them going for extra bases; Troy hit nine doubles, two triples and four home runs.

The Trojans (3-0) belted out 24 hits in the opener, including nine extra-base hits against five different Rattler pitchers. Ali Knowles, Logan Pierce and David Hall all had three hits, while Justin Hancock, Tyler Vaughn and Josh McDorman had two hits; McDorman homered in his first at-bat of the game.

Tanner Hicks (1-0) struck out six and walked just one over four innings in his first career start for Troy. The junior right-hander allowed a pair of runs on a first-inning home run by Justin Abney and scattered four hits. William Teal and Robert Price both saw their first action of the season on the mound for the Trojans in the opener.

McCain (1-0), who missed all of the 2012 season with an injury, struck out four and allowed just one earned run over four innings in the nightcap. The junior southpaw yielded just four hits and did not issue a walk. Austin Sullivan, Jeremy McGowan and Ivan Carter all pitched a scoreless frame out of the bullpen.

The Trojans led 5-1 after four innings of play and broke the game open with a run off a Santos sac fly in the fifth and a five-run sixth inning.

Vaughn drove in three runs on a pair of doubles and Jakob Nixon added a pair of hits, including his first home run of year; Nixon hit three home runs over Troy’s final four games of the 2012 season. Collins, Santos and Nixon drove in a pair of runs each and Hancock added a double.

The Trojans and Rattlers wrap up their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Senior right-hander Ryan Brady is scheduled to make the start on the mound for the Trojans.
