LAFAYETTE, La. – Troy scored four runs on the strength of six straight hits to open the game and Shane McCain threw his second complete game of the year as the Trojans defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 10-4 in the final game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at “Tigue” Moore Field.
Troy's victory snapped Louisiana-Lafayette's 11-game home win streak, which was the second longest in the country. The Trojans (21-9, 7-5 Sun Belt) move into a tie for third place in the Sun Belt with South Alabama and are just a game behind Western Kentucky and Florida Atlantic for first; Troy travels to Western Kentucky next weekend.
After back-to-back singles by Tyler Vaughn and Logan Pierce to open the contest, Danny Collins and Trae Santos delivered consecutive run-scoring base hits to give the Trojans the early advantage. Collins scored the third run of the inning on a ULL throwing error and following a Matthew Howard single, Josh McDorman cashed in the final run with a base hit to left.
McDorman finished with a career-high four hits to go along with a pair of RBIs and several nice defensive plays in left field. Howard was 3-for-5 in the contest with two doubles while Vaughn, Collins and Santos all had two hits.
McCain (6-0), who is the only undefeated pitcher in the Sun Belt with at least five decisions, scattered 14 hits over his complete game and most importantly did not issue a walk in the contest. The southpaw struck out six batters and all four of ULL's runs came on a pair of two-run homers by Dex Kjerstad.
The first of Kjerstad's home runs came in the second after Blake Trahan extended the inning with a two-out double.
The Trojans answered back in the top of the third after three straight one-out hits plated a run. Howard got the frame rolling with a double and McDorman reached with a bunt single. McDorman stole second and Jakob Nixon punched a single through the left side of the infield to score Howard.
The score remained 5-1 until the bottom of the sixth when Logan Preston led off the frame with a single and Kjerstad hit his second home run of the game to pull the Cajuns (22-9, 6-6) within one, 5-4.
Once again the Trojans answered, this time with a three spot in the seventh. Vaughn led off the frame with a single and Pierce drew a walk. Santos loaded the bases with a single to right and Howard plated two runs with his fourth double of the weekend. McDorman pushed a single back up the middle to give Troy a 9-5 advantage.
Following a shutdown seventh by McCain, Collins opened the eighth with his seventh home run and 40th RBI of the season.
Cody Boutte (5-2) was tagged with the loss for the Cajuns after he allowed five runs on 10 hits over six innings of work. Kjerstad and Ryan Leonards led ULL with three hits each while Caleb Adams and Dylan Butler added a pair of hits apiece.
Troy returns home to face Jacksonville State on Tuesday night before traveling to Samford on Wednesday and then to WKU for the weekend.
