TROY, Alabama – The Troy football team hits the road this weekend as they travel to Mobile, Ala., for match up against in-state, conference rival South Alabama. The teams square off in a Friday night, nationally televised game on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m.
The Jaguars are looking for revenge after the Trojans defeated them at Veterans Memorial Stadium, 34-33, last season. With a mere 48 seconds to play, Eric Thomas hauled in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Corey Robinson to take the final lead.
The Trojans (1-6, 1-1 SBC) are coming off of a tough loss against Sun Belt newcomer, Appalachian State. Troy came out on its first drive and took a 7-0 lead. However, the Mountaineers scored 24 unanswered points in the first half and the Trojans were unable to catch up.
On special teams, Troy leads the conference in kick off returns and is ranked 11th nationally with 25.71 yards per return. Chandler Worthy has sparked the Trojans special teams with a kickoff return touchdown in each of the last two games. He is just the sixth player in FBS history to return a kickoff for a touchdown in two straight games.
On the offensive side of the ball, Brandon Silvers ranks first in the Sun Belt with a 68.7 completion percentage. In his six games as the Trojans’ quarterback, Silvers is 114-of-166 for 1,146 yards and five scores. He also has four touchdowns on the ground.
Worthy also paces the offense with 27 catches for 320 yards, and three scores. Brandon Burks leads all rushers with 322 yards and two touchdowns while Jordan Chunn has four rushing scores.
JaQuadrian Lewis shined on defense against App State as he forced two fumbles in the first half and ended the game with a career-high 10 tackles and two tackles for loss. On the year, Montres Kitchens and Mark Wilson lead the squad with 45 tackles. Tyler Roberts has been a force to be reckoned with behind the line, as he has tallied seven tackles for loss. Roberts and Stadom have been applying pressure from both ends of the line, both totaling four sacks apiece.
South Alabama (4-2, 3-1 SBC) has won three straight going into Friday’s contest. Quarterback Brandon Bridge, last week’s Sun Belt Player of the Week, has tallied 294 yards on the ground and three rushing touchdowns. In the air, the dual-threat quarterback has also completed 94-of-183 passes for 1,174 yards, including eight touchdowns.
Defensively, Terrell Brigham, who has 47 tackles on the year, including three for loss, leads the Jaguars. Theo Rich has tallied a team-high six sacks, which ranks second in the Sun Belt.
The game can also be heard on the Troy Sports Radio Network with play-by-play coverage from Barry McKnight, color commentary from Jerry Miller and sideline reports from Chris Blackshear.
