Troy Opens Spring Football Practice on Monday

TROY, Ala. – The Troy football team will open its spring practice schedule on Monday at 3:45 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Troy’s 15 spring practices are open to the media and the general public.

The Trojans will go through seven practice sessions over a two-week period before taking a week off for spring break. Following the time off, Troy will practice seven more times before the annual T-Day Spring Game at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.

“We are going a little bit earlier this year so we can get a couple of weeks in the middle of April to prepare for recruiting,” head coach Larry Blakeney said. “I’m looking forward to getting started and we’ve got a lot of things to find out about our team this spring. I think that we’ve got a chance to be a pretty good team.

“On defense we’ve got to find a way to try and stop someone or slow them down,” Blakeney said. “We’re working hard in preparation of that right now. We are trying to put together some things to find ways to get better during spring ball.”

Spring practice will feature a quarterback battle for the first time since 2010 as record-setting quarterback Corey Robinson has departed and four players will be vying for the job.

Junior Dallas Tidwell is the lone quarterback on the roster with game experience as a Trojan, while redshirt freshman Brandon Silvers has one year in offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield’s system.

Also in the mix will be the quarterbacks from the top two junior college teams in the country last season. First team All-American Dontreal Pruitt, who guided top-ranked East Mississippi, and Connor Bravard, who was the signal caller for No. 2 Iowa Western, are on campus and will go through spring practice.

“There will be a lot of meetings, a lot of practice preparations and a lot of reps,” Blakeney said of the quarterback competition. “When you’re in a situation like we are right now, you need to make sure that you come out of the spring with some sort of knowledge of who the top two or three are. Sometimes those things happen early and sometimes they drag on a little bit. I think it would be better for our football team if we had an idea who the starter is going to be or at least who the top two guys are going to be by the time we finish spring ball.”

Additionally, Troy will be looking for players to step into roles vacated by All-Sun Belt safety Camren Hudson, offensive lineman Evan McKissack, defensive lineman Antonio Gillespie and Will Scott, who handled both the place kicking and punting duties for the Trojans.

The Trojans will work out in shorts and helmets for the first two practices before a couple of days in shoulder pads and helmets. Monday, March 3, will mark the first practice in full pads as the Trojans work towards a full scrimmage on Friday, March 7.
