Troy Offense Explodes in 15-4 Win Over Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Troy scored in six different innings, including multiple runs in five frames, en route to a commanding 15-4 victory at Samford Wednesday night.

Troy (23-9), who has now won 10 of its last 12 games, jumped on Samford (19-15) early and often. The Trojans scored three runs in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the eighth.

The heart of the Troy lineup punished Samford pitching all night as Logan Pierce, Danny Collins and Trae Santos combined to go 9-for-14 with three doubles, nine runs scored and seven RBIs. Pierce finished with three hits, four runs scored and two RBIs; Collins had three hits, two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs; and Santos added three hits, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Jakob Nixon added a pair of hits and an RBI while Tyler Vaughn scored twice. The Trojans recorded 37 at-bats in the contest, drew nine walks and were hit by six pitches. Vaughn, Troy’s leadoff hitter, batted in seven of the nine innings.

Thomas Austin (2-0) tossed three scoreless frames out of the Troy bullpen to pick up his second win of the season. Robert Price followed with consecutive shutdown innings and William Teal, who was throwing in back-to-back games, tossed a perfect ninth.

Samford starter Patrick Maronde loaded the bases in the first after walking a pair of Trojans around a hit batter. Maronde then hit Matthew Howard to plate a run, McDorman followed with a sac fly and Nixon drove a single up the middle to score Santos.

Christiaan Durdaller led off the Samford second with a solo home run and Zeth Stone started the third inning in the same fashion. The Bulldogs only other runs came in the fourth on an error and a triple by Austin Allison.

McDorman’s homer came in the third after Santos led off the frame with a double; Santos has 10 hits, including a double, a triple and two home runs, to go along with 10 RBIs over the past six games.

Maronde (1-2) took the loss for Samford after he allowed three runs on a hit in one inning; the Bulldogs used eight different pitches in the game.

The Trojans face a big Sun Belt Conference test this weekend as they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., for a three-game set with Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers enter the weekend tied with Florida Atlantic for first place in the Sun Belt – just one game ahead of the Trojans.
