NEW ORLEANS – Troy University wide receiver Eric Thomas, offensive lineman Terrence Jones and punter Will Scott were named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Team, the league office announced Monday in conjunction with the start of Sun Belt Football Media Day.

The Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches Poll was also released on Monday and Troy was selected to finish in fifth place. ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette both received 57 points to top the list followed by Arkansas State (45), Western Kentucky (44), Troy (35), Texas State (23), South Alabama (19) and Georgia State (8).

Thomas, a senior, enters the season as the Sun Belt’s active leader with 17 career touchdown receptions. The Shreveport, La., native has 122 receptions for 1,542 yards over the past two seasons and was named All-Sun Belt both seasons. Thomas moves back to the X receiver role for the Trojans this season, a position where he caught 67 passes for 875 yards and nine touchdowns in 2011.

Thomas has caught a pass in 25 straight games and was featured on SportsCenter for a touchdown catch he made against Western Kentucky last season. Thomas has topped the 100-yard receiving mark three times in his career including a 147-yard outburst at Tennessee last year.

Scott, a senior, averaged 41.0 yards per punt last season, but more importantly only had two touchbacks. Troy led the Sun Belt with a 38.4 net punt average as only 16 of Scott’s 54 punts were returned for a total of just 32 yards. The native of Lucedale, Miss., had 18 punts land inside the 20-yard line and booted seven punts over 50 yards. He was twice named Sun Belt Special Teams Player of the Week and is on the Groza Award Watch List (nation’s top place kicker).

Jones has been an anchor on the Troy offensive line over the past two seasons as he has started 20 of the Trojans 24 games those two years. The junior from Huntsville, Ala., was a key piece to the Troy offensive line that ranked 25th in the nation last season in fewest sacks allowed. Jones and the Troy front five helped pave the way for the Trojans rank eighth in the country in passing yards and 11th in total offense. Jones allowed just one-and-a-half sacks in his 873 snaps last season.

Troy opens the season on Aug. 31 against UAB in Veterans Memorial Stadium. The game will be broadcast live by ESPN3 and will kick off at 6 p.m.

Season tickets for Troy’s five home games are available and can be purchased by calling the Troy ticket office at 1-877-878-WINS, by logging on to or by visiting the Tine Davis Fieldhouse.
