TROY, Ala. – The Troy football team hit the turf at Veterans Memorial Stadium for the first time since last fall on Thursday afternoon, to open up the 2013 spring practice schedule.
The practice is the first of many scheduled over the next month, as the Trojans will practice every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday leading up to the annual T-Day Spring Game on April 20 at 11 a.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Practices will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m. during the week and 10 a.m. on the weekend.
Troy opened on Thursday in shorts with more than 26 five-minute periods practicing in various individual and team drills and schemes. The Trojans will practice again on Saturday in just shorts before opening up with shells (pads/helmets) on Tuesday and Thursday. Players will suit up in full pads for the first time next Saturday, March 30.
“We’ve got a lot of new faces but some we know a lot about,” Troy head coach Larry Blakeney said. “We’re trying to find as many new faces that become players as possible here in the spring. We’ll add a pretty good signing class this summer during training camp, and we’ll try to see where we can get to by the time we open against UAB.”
Quarterback Corey Robinson returns for his senior season and will enter the season as the NCAA's active leader in passing attempts, completions and passing yards. He will have one of his favorite targets back in senior wide receiver Eric Thomas, who has 1,664 career receiving yards and 17 touchdown receptions.
“We’ve had a good offseason, a lot of participation,” Blakeney said. “Hopefully we got some team bonding out of it and some conditioning and strength out of it. We’ve done a lot of prep work as far as teaching just trying to get schemes. Offensively we know our schemes pretty well but defensively there’s a lot of verbiage and a lot of terminology. Hopefully we’ll grasp it early, stay with it and get better as we go.”
