NEW ORLEANS, La. – A long scoreless stretch midway through the second half was too much to overcome, as Troy (11-20) fell to UALR (15-16), 74-61, in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament at Lakefront Arena.
“I thought the game turned there early in the second half when we got a couple of point-blank opportunities,” said head coach Phil Cunningham. “It was a back-and-forth game early in the second half and we got a couple shots right in the paint that rolled in-and-out and they hit us with a pretty good run.”
Troy battled back from five points down to tie the score up at 44-44 with 13:29 to play, but went on a long cold stretch from there, failing to score for the next 8:34. Over that same stretch, UALR scored 16 points, taking a lead that it would not surrender.
Troy fought through the final minute, but eventually fell by 13.
Tevin Calhoun led the way for Troy with 15 points on the night. Antoine Myers finished with 12, while Hunter Williams scored 11. Jeff Mullahey also scored in double-figures, finishing with 10 points. Josh Warren grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Troy shot 30.2 percent (19-of-63) from the field and 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc. Troy shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the free throw line. UALR won the rebounding battle 42-41.
The two teams battled to a 33-33 tie at the half. Troy had trailed by as many as four points inside the final two minutes of the half, but recovered to level the score.
