Troy Falls at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Troy University baseball team fell behind early and could never catch up as it dropped a midweek contest to Samford 6-2 at J.L. Griffin Field on Tuesday.

Trojan starter Cody Hughes walked the first two batters of the game then surrendered a two-out, three-run home run to Caleb Bryson to give the Bulldogs the early lead. Hughes (0-1) would pitch to one batter in the second inning before giving way to the bullpen; he would also take the loss.

Troy (20-21) was able to respond in the top of the second after Matthew Howard and Nick Masonia singled with two outs and Trevin Hall drove them in with a double to right-center field. The Trojans would not get another base hit until the seventh inning.

Samford (25-16) added single runs in the second, third and fifth innings while using four relief pitchers to shut the door. Starter Cody Pugh picked up the win on the mound pitching four innings allowing two runs on three hits.

Nick Masoina picked up a pair of infield hits and was the only Troy batter with multiple hits on the night.

With the win, Samford sweeps the season series from the Trojans after taking an 11-9 decision at Riddle-Pace Field earlier in the season.

Troy will travel to take on rival Jacksonville State on Wednesday at Rudy Abbott Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on WTBF 94.7 FM and streamed live on TroyTrojans.com.
