TROY, Ala. – William Shell picked up a pair of wins on the mound as the Troy baseball team defeated Alabama State twice by identical scores of 8-5 on Wednesday at Riddle-Pace Field.
Shell (3-1) was the pitcher of record as the teams resumed their suspended game from March 11. He already pitched 3 1/3 innings when the game started a week ago and tossed another inning to earn the win.
In the second game, Shell entered in the seventh with a runner on base and Troy clinging to a 4-3 lead. A base hit would score the run but the Trojans would go on to score four runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead and make Shell the pitcher of record again.
Jo-El Bennett and Matthew Howard would each hit a two-run home run in the second game and Nick Masonia would finish 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs on a bases loaded single in the seventh as the Trojans fought off a pesky Hornets squad. Bennett was 3-for-3 on game and scored twice. Troy now has 21 home runs in as many games.
Ben Tidwell got the start on the mound and tossed 3 1/3 innings allowing one run on three hits. Will Starling would come on in relief of Tidwell and retire five batters – all consecutively via strikeout.
Alabama State (18-8) used six pitchers in the game, none lasting more than three innings. Troy improves its record against the Hornets at Riddle-Pace Field to 10-0 all-time.
The Trojans (12-9, 1-1 SBC) will return to Sun Belt Conference action over the weekend as they play host to ULM. The series starts on Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
