STATESBORO, Ga. – The Troy softball team (9-9-2) finished off the Eagle Classic on Sunday with a 5-2 win over former Sun Belt foe Middle Tennessee (5-16). The Trojans finished the weekend classic 4-1, including a pair of wins over the Blue Raiders.
Jaycee Affeldt picked up another win in the circle after allowing five hits and striking out nine in seven innings.
Troy struck first, scoring one in the top half of the first inning. Mackenzie Kayler reached on an error to get things started and advanced to second on a walk to Michelle Phelps. Kayler would then come home on a single through the right side by Rachel Rigney.
The Trojans picked up two more in the second, with Becca Hartley crushing her first career home run to left field.
Middle Tennessee got on the board in the bottom of the second and added its final run in the fifth.
Troy added some insurance in the seventh. Kayler got things going with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Erica Davis. Next up, Phelps blasted her team-leading fourth home run of the season, putting Troy up 5-2.
Phelps was tremendous on the weekend, hitting .538 with five RBIs. Affeldt was Troy’s top performer in the circle, finishing the weekend 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.
Next up for the Trojans is a day trip out to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Troy will then head to the UCF Knights Spring Fling for five games over the weekend.
