TROY, Ala. – Troy (10-13, 5-7) got back into the win column with a huge 71-52 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (8-16, 4-9) on Saturday night. Troy led for most of the contest, pulling ahead by as many as 24 points.
“This is probably our best overall game of the year,” said head coach Don Maestri. “We did well defensively, and offensively we controlled the temp.”
Troy took a 10-point lead into the half and never looked back. The Trojans got buckets from everywhere, with eight guys scoring at least five points. Tevin Calhoun led the way with 15, while shooting 3-of-5 from range.
The Trojans controlled the tempo all game long, forcing the Ragin' Cajuns into tough, contested shots. The bench was key to the team success, with Troy outscoring Louisiana-Lafayette 37-22.
“They're learning how to play the game of basketball better,” Maestri said. “Defensively, they're communicating better and it's all starting to click.”
Ray Chambers was the only other Trojan to score in double-figures, finishing with 10 points, while Troy picked up its largest win of the season. Bryant Mbamalu led the Ragin' Cajuns, who scored 105 points in their last game, with 16 points.
Troy shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the field and 50 percent (9-of-18) from beyond the arc. Louisiana-Lafayette was 20-of-53 from the field (37.7 %) and 7-of-18 from range (38.9 %). Troy won the rebound battle, 35-32.
Troy is back in action on Thursday, February 7, when it travels to Mobile, Ala., to face in-state rival South Alabama. Tip-off is set for 7:05 p.m.
