Sun Belt Announces Post-Season Baseball Awards

LAFAYETTE, La. – South Alabama junior utility player Jordan Patterson and the Jaguars head coach Mark Calvi have been voted Sun Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Year and the Ron Maestri Coach of the Year, respectively, by the league’s ten head coaches who were announced at the pre-tournament Championship Family Night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field Tuesday evening.

In addition, Troy junior right-hander Shane McCain was named the SBC Pitcher of the Year and Louisiana-Lafayette shortstop, Blake Trahan, was named the SBC Freshman of the Year.

USA’s Patterson was instrumental in the Jags success this season as the junior from Mobile, Ala., as he started every game this season for USA leading the team in hits (76), batting average (.365) and on-base percentage (.498). His on-base percentage was also tops in the SBC while runs scored were second in the league at 62.

Patterson finished second in league play with a .402 average and hit safely in 44 of the teams 56 games this season. Additionally, Patterson posted a 2.31 ERA in 11 appearances this season with two saves and 14 strikeouts in 11.2 innings pitched while not allowing a run in nine of his 11 appearances.

Patterson is the first Jag to be named SBC Player of the Year since USA’s David Freese in 2006.

Troy’s McCain was the unquestionably leader on the hill for the Trojans this season as the junior posted a league-leading eight wins on the campaign and posting an SBC best 97 strikeouts. He finished the 2013 regular-season with an 8-1 record and a 3.70 ERA. McCain’s control has been clutch this season allowing just 17 walks in 87.2 innings pitched which also led the SBC.

McCain held the opposition to an SBC-best .221 batting average. He becomes the first Trojan since Tyler Ray in 2011 to earn SBC Pitcher of the Year accolades.

Louisiana-Lafayette’s Trahan picked up the rookie honor during a 2013 campaign that saw the freshman from Kinder, La., bat .335 while driving in 32 RBIs and scoring 41 runs. Trahan was also the only freshman in the Cajuns starting line-up this season starting 54 of the teams 55 games at shortstop.

Trahan becomes the first Ragin’ Cajun to ever earn the SBC Freshman of the Year award.

USA’s Calvi earned his first SBC coach of the Year award after leading the Jaguars to a 40-16 overall record and a share of the SBC regular-season crown with a 20-10 conference record as the Jaguars captured their 14th SBC title. The 40 wins in the season for the Jags marked the first time since 2003 that the team has reached the 40-win plateau.

The Jags, which won 23 games in Calvi’s first year in Mobile, had one of the biggest turnarounds in the country as they were second in the league in both hitting (.304 team average) and pitching (4.04 ERA). The Jaguars enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed and look to win the program’s 12th overall tournament title and first since 2005.

Troy, the top seed in the tournament, placed four student-athletes on the SBC All-Conference First Team. The Jaguars and the Cajuns led all teams with seven total selections between first- and second-team All-Conference (three on the first-team and four on the second-team).
