Straughn Beats Rival Opp at South Regional Tournament

The Straughn Girls Basketball Team beat Opp three times during the regular season. The fourth time proved to be the Tigers biggest win of the season.

Straughn held off a late Opp rally for a 48-41 victory, earning a spot in the Class 3A Final Four on Wednesday against Holy Pond. Opp ends the year with 21-4 record, with all four of those losses coming to the Tigers.

Brittany Driver scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, earning tournament MVP honors. Katelyn Kinsaul added 11 points, helping the Tigers improve to 32-2 on the year.

Laiken Free scored 17 points and Quanisha Stoudemire added 13 points for the Bobcats. Stoudemire suffered a knee injury late in the first half, but returned after the break, playing a total of 25 minutes before fouling out.

Straughn appeared to be in complete control early on, building an 18-point lead in the second quarter. But, the Bobcats would not go away, cutting that lead to 14 points at half, 11 points entering the fourth, and eventually just five points in the final two minutes.

That's when Driver took over, driving to the basket for a key lay-up that swung momentum back to the Tigers. Straughn won despite shooting just 44 percent and committing 20 turnovers.
