MOBILE, Alabama - Opelika High School defensive back Malcolm Buggs verbally committed Saturday to sign with South Alabama.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound safety-cornerback selected the Jaguars over several other schools that had expressed an interest in him, including Georgia Tech and other Sun Belt Conference schools. He becomes the eighth verbal commitment picked up by South Alabama this summer, six of which are defensive backs.
"I like the fact that they were really sold on me and the fact that they wanted me the most, and I'll be playing in Alabama, not far from home,'' Buggs told AL.com in a telephone interview Saturday. "I will have playing time and I'll be playing a position that's good for me and playing with some good folks.
"Kevin Sherrer, the defensive coordinator, was at Alabama and now he'll be my position coach, and I was sold on that. They have great facilities and they're building a lot; there's a lot of construction going on down there. I liked being a part of the building block of this program because it's taking off.
