UPDATE: North Sweeps Soccer Double Header at All-Star Sports Week

MONTGOMERY, AL -- The North All-Stars beat the South 5-2 in the girls’ match and the boys’ team won its match 2-0 as the 2013 AHSAA All-Star Sports Week and Summer Conference completed day two Tuesday.

All-Star Sports Week competition continues Wednesday night with Norrth-South girls and boys basketball games at Alabama State’s Oliver-Dunn Acadome beginning at 6 p.m. The North-South Volleyball All-Star match will be at Faulkner University’s Tyne Davis Gymnasium Thursday at 4 p.m., and the 54th playing of the North-South All-Star Football Game will be Thursday night at Cramton Bowl with a 7 p.m. kickoff.

North Boys 2, South 0

The North posted the shutout thanks to a strong defensive effort by Homewood midfielder Chris Simpson. Simpson was named MVP for his team.

Steven Breaux of Spain Park scored the game’s first goal with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. Daniel Buchanan of Huntsville got the final goal with five minutes left to play.

Auburn’s Logan Hill was named South MVP with his strong defensive effort. Goalkeepers Joey Ferguson of St. Paul’s and Dashaun Lewis of St. James turned in strong performances with three saves and two saves respectively.

The North, coached by Joe Webb of Mountain Brook and Sean McBride of Homewood, out-shot the South 18-6 on the night to improve to 8-4-1 in the series. South coaches were Ruben Risco of McGill-Toolen and Bo Morrisey of Auburn.

MONTGOMERY, AL -- Northridge High School forward Amanda Baker scored a hat trick Tuesday night to spark the North All-Stars to a 5-2 win over the South in the AHSAA North-South All-Star soccer competition at Emory Folmar YMCA Stadium.

Baker, who was named North MVP, scored her first with eight seconds left in the first half to break a scoreless tie. Claudia Day of Briarwood Christian made it 2-0 with a quick goal to start the second half. She got a nice assist from Chelsea’s Britne Holderby – the first of three assists for the midfielder.

Holderby used two corner kicks to assist on goals by Day and Baker midway through the second half to seal the win.

The South got on the scoreboard with Alabama Christian’s Hampton Brinson scored with just over 14 minutes remaining in the final half. Jane Hampton, who earned MVP honors for the South, got the final goal of the match with 5:02 remaining.

With the win, the North improved to 10-2-1 in the series.

North coaches were Brigid Littleton of Vestavia Hills and Brad Carwile of East Limestone with now retired George Cavendar as the administrative coach. South coaches included Kacey Ivey of Alabama Christian and Jon Sauers of Faith Academy. Alabama Christian’s Ken Wright served as administrative assistant.
