TROY, Ala. – Troy University men’s basketball and head coach Phil Cunningham have released the 2013-14 schedule. Troy plays 14 games at home inside Trojan Arena this season.
The Trojans begin the season with a road trip to Ole Miss, a NCAA Tournament team from a season ago, on Friday, November 8. The Rebels finished the 2012-13 season with a tremendous 16-1 record inside C.M. Tad Smith Coliseum, with their only loss coming against Kentucky. From there, the team returns to the friendly confines of Trojan Arena for its first regular season home game of the year, against LaGrange, on Monday, November 11.
Following a road contest at UAB on November 14, the Trojans will face Nicholls State at home on November 19, before heading into the Thanksgiving break. A trip to Conway, Ark., to face Central Arkansas on November 26, closes out the first month of the season for the Trojans.
Troy will then face Alcorn State on Monday, December 2, and Alabama State on Saturday, December 7, at Trojan Arena. Troy split the two game series with the Hornets last season, winning the home contest 66-62.
The longest road stretch of the season comes next for the Trojans, with four games in a week, including three against teams that won more than 20 games last season. The trip starts with a visit to the “Octagon of Doom” to face Kansas State on December 15. The Wildcats took home a share of the Big 12 regular season title last year and advanced to the championship game of the Big 12 Tournament.
Next, the team heads to Logan, Utah, for the Basketball Travelers Classic, hosted by Utah State. Troy begins the Classic against UC Santa Barbara on December 19, followed by Western Illinois on December 20, and host Utah State on December 21. The Dee Glen Smith Spectrum is notorious for being one of the toughest gyms in the country, with the Aggies going 82-10 at home over the past five years.
Troy wraps up its non-conference schedule at home on Saturday, December 28, against Belhaven.
Conference play begins on January 2, with the Trojans heading out to new Sun Belt Conference member Georgia State. The Trojans defeated the Panthers, 57-56, at home last season. Troy’s first SBC home game is against defending tournament champion Western Kentucky on Saturday, January 4.
The Trojans will face every SBC team twice in 2013-14, closing out the regular season with a pair of home contests against UT-Arlington and Texas State on March 6, and March 8. Seven of Troy’s nine home, conference games will be played as part of a doubleheader with the women’s basketball team.
The Sun Belt Conference Championships begin on Thursday, March 13, at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans and run through March 16.
