NEW YORK (AP) -- Manti Te'o has not been selected in the first round of the NFL draft.
The Notre Dame linebacker became a tabloid sensation in January with revelations that the girlfriend who supposedly died during the season was actually a hoax. But what probably hurt his draft stock the most centered on football.
Te'o played poorly in a national title game loss to Alabama. Then he ran a slow 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine.
Teams had to weigh that against his regular-season performance, when he had seven interceptions and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pound All-American was considered a late first-round or early second-round pick heading into the draft Thursday. Now he'll have to wait until Friday, when the second and third rounds are held.
