LaFayette Head Coach Obadiah Threadgill IV rolled the dice in the waning moments of Tuesday's 2A State Semifinal showdown with Elba. Threadgill chose to hold the ball for the final two minutes with the game tied at 35 apiece.
The move paid huge dividends, as the Bulldogs used a putback at the buzzer to beat the Tigers 37-35, earning a spot in Friday's 2A Championship Game. LaFayette will play the winner of Luverne and Tanner for the 2A Title.
After running more than 1:50 off the clock, the Bulldogs called timeout with six seconds left. Out of the timeout, Raquazious Boyd took a deep 3-pointer that was well short. However, two Tiger defenders fought for the rebound, and it ricocheted directly to Kentaviious Landers, who beat the buzzer with a lay-in to win the game.
Landers' last-second putback capped a wild comeback for LaFayette. The Bulldogs trailed midway through the third quarter, but ended the game on a 20-6 run to secure the win.
Cobe Goosby, Martavious Gray and Harry Griffin led the Tigers with eight points each. Elba ends the year with a 25-5 record.
The Tigers controlled most of the game, jumping out to an early lead and taking a 20-12 advantage into halftime. Elba extended the lead to 29-17 midway through the third quarter, before the Bulldogs went to a fullcourt press that forced the Tigers into several turnovers.
Boyd led LaFayette with 12 points.
