(DOTHAN)- The pops, cracks and thuds of football practice at Northside Methodist Academy sound like those you'd hear at any other. However, this Fall the Knights will field a football team for the first time in school history.

The Knights will join the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) at a Junior Varsity level beginning in August. Michael Marks and Paul Newton are coaching the Knights and bring high-energy to practice and the idea of what this means for Northside Methodist.

"It's really significant," said Marks.

"I think it's going to be a great way for the school to expand its horizon. It's also going to be a good opportunity to attract new students that maybe we haven't had before," he said.

The Knights are sporting practice jerseys that say Crusaders on them. The Crusaders jerseys were bought from the defunct football team at Enterprise Prepatory Academy. When you’re just getting started, you’ll take what you can get.

“We’ve got the bare essentials to go but to be the best we’ve got to get a lot more,” said Newton.

Players range in grade level from seventh through eleventh. While naysayers do exist, freshman Andrew Quattlebaum says the overall attitude of the team is positive.

“The guys out on the field, man we’re pumped! I can tell my kids one day, look what I did. I’m just excited. I’m glad to see what I started,” he said.

The Knights are hoping to be pioneers of sorts but players and coaches alike understand it’s going to be a long journey before they’re comfortably established.

Northside Methodist will travel to Abbeville Christian to play a spring game on May 16th.
