Houston Academy Captures 1A-3A Girls’ Tennis Title

Houston Academy snapped Montgomery Academy’s hold on the Class 1A-3A state girls’ tennis championships Tuesday with a narrow 56-51 win over the Lady Eagles in the 2014 championships at Lagoon Park.
The Raiders posted wins in three of the six singles finals. Montgomery Academy, with one singles winner and a key victory over Houston Academy in the No. 2 doubles finals, had won six straight 1A-3A state crowns dating back to 2008 and 14 total championships. For Houston Academy, coached by William Hart, the state title was the Dothan school’s eighth overall and fourth since 2003.
Madison Academy junior Sydney Homan beat Houston Academy’s Natalie Voss at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, for her third consecutive 1A-3A state title. Winning singles titles for Houston Academy were Nicola Voss, an eighth-grader, at No. 2, and sophomores Mary Frances White and Kavita Kantamneni at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Homan and Erin Young beat Houston Academy’s Voss sisters at No. 1 doubles. Elizabeth Robertson and Holland Griffin downed Houston Academy’s Claire Duerson and White at No. 2 doubles in the last match of the day, 6-2, 6-2, to keep it close.
Decatur Heritage was voted the 1A-3A Sportsmanship Award recipient.
