Gus Malzahn, Bobby Bowden agree on slow-down rule

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says Bobby Bowden helped get the ball rolling on uptempo offenses.
Malzahn accepted the Bowden Award as national coach of the year Sunday night. Before that, he reminisced about his days watching Bowden's offenses at Florida State in the early 1990s when Charlie Ward led the Seminoles to a national championship. Malzahn says Bowden "is one of those guys that kind of started a lot of this wide-open offense."
Bowden, meanwhile, says he opposes a proposed rule designed to slow down up-tempo offenses unless he hears evidence that players are getting hurt because of it.
Beyond that he says college football should "leave it alone."
The award is selected by the National Sports Writers and Sports Broadcasters of America and the Over The Mountain Touchdown Club.
