Goshen Wins Opener at State Softball Tournament

MONTGOMERY, AL -- The Goshen Softball Team got off to a strong start at the State Tournament in Montgomery on Thursday morning. In fact, the Eagles got off to a fast start in the very first inning of their 5-2 win over Walter Welborn.

Goshen scored twice in the first inning, and added three more runs in the fifth to knock off the Panthers. With the win, Goshen advanced to face Mobile Christian in a winner's bracket game at 1:30 p.m. at Lagoon Park.

The Eagles used the long ball to take an early lead, as Katie Thomas belted a two-run homer in the first inning. Goshen added to that lead in the fifth, as a Panthers error allowed a run to score and Haley Hughes added a two-run single.

Base running errors plagued Walter Welborn, who squandered several scoring chances by having runners picked off or thrown out trying to steal. The Panthers will face Lexington in a loser's bracket game at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
